The Southwestern District
Association of Barbershop Chapters

. . . has one of the richest histories in the entire Barbershop Harmony Society (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. Inc).  It covers a vast area including organized chapters in five states - Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and the southern portion of New Mexico.

There are currently 1683 members and 44 chapters (as of July 2005).

The chapters range in size from 9 men to 188.  Each chapter is unique and includes members who share the same love of singing close, 4-part, barbershop style harmony.

We take great pride in the fact that the entire barbershop harmony Society started right here in our area, Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 11th, 1938.  It was there several men gathered for the purpose of preserving an old American art form, The Barbershop Quartet and the right to enjoy those wonderful harmonies of years past.  They started a "club" and when word spread, other groups sprang up all over the nation and the barbershop society was born.  The SWD is the home of the first chapter in Tulsa as well as the third chapter in Oklahoma City.  As the harmony spread, districts were formed and we were originally part of the Central States District.  The SWD was officially born July 1, 1949.

We're called the "District of Champions" for several reasons.  Over the years we've hosted 7 International Conventions, been the home of three International Presidents, 11 International Quartet Champions and 12 International Chorus Champions.

There are four divisions that make up the SWD
(creatively called NW, NE, SW, SE).

See List by Division Below

The SWD is part of a larger organization called The Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) previously known as  The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. Inc.) that consists of 810 chapters in 16 districts with 29.024 members (as of July 2005). There are also affiliates in many foreign countries.

The Society is governed by a board of directors.  Our 2005 Int'l President is Rob Hopkins of Clinton, NY.  The SWD is represented on the Society Board of Directors by Bill Biffle of Albuquerque, NM.

One of the highlights of barbershopping is attending a convention.  Each division holds a convention in the spring, the District has a convention in the fall and the International is held each summer (July 4th weekend) by the Society. The next Int'l will be in Indianapolis, IN.

Our Society headquarters is in Kenosha, Wisconsin where we have a staff of about 40 people.  The headquarters is affectionately known as  "Harmony Hall" and is now located at 7930 Sheridan Rd, Kenosha, WI 53143.

You can reach the headquarters and the staff via 1-800-876-7464 (1-800-876-SING).  The Society has a web page at <www.spebsqsa.org>.  There is an organization for women who like to sing barbershop called "Sweet Adelines" via the website <http://www.sweetadelineintl.org> and via 800-992-7464.

The SWD has a web site with lots of valuable resources.  You can find the official barbershop calendar, current officers and how to contact them, upcoming events of interest, scores of past contests, a list of SWD chapters & quartets.    www.swd.org

The SWD also has a Barbershopper's Shop.  They handle a wide range of items including recordings, t-shirts, pitch pipes, music books, jewelry and almost everything you'd ever want related to barbershopping.  They set up shop at many of the SWD conventions and can be reached via the SWD website.
