Updated September 2005

Welcome

I always wondered why no one ever did a screen saver for all the "barbershop" computers of the world.  Well, here it is. I've gathered all the gold medal quartets in one place to grace your computer screen while you're not busy.  Yes, here are ALL of the gold medal winners of the Barbershop Harmony Society (aka SPEBSQSA Inc.) quartet contests from the Bartlesville Barflies (1939) to Realtime (2005).

This is a very unique collection that exists No Where Else.  I know, because i spent months searching for these.  In most cases the actual 8X10 photos were used and as you'll see, some of these photos are actually autographed.  I also put together a composite of ALL of these photos as part of the images appearing in this package.

It is available in two forms.  One is Webshots. The software program being used for this is a FREE download from WEBSHOTS.COM.  It's a very nice little program and gives you several options on how to display these images.  More on that later. I also offer these as a Microsoft Power Point Presentation.

During this project I actually got to work with many of these great champions in obtaining these photos.  The criteria for this collection were to gather as many of the shots in color (results: 1965 to present day) and use the official shot of the quartet with the trophy taken (in most cases) just moments after they were announced the winners.

I also spent a great deal of time digitally correcting these photos for the proper colors (many of the old ones were badly faded) and even fixing a few that, well, for one reason or another, needed fixing.  In the early B&W shots, I added a little sepia tone color just to make them look a little nicer. I used Paint Shop Pro 6.02 for all this. Each photo is as good as it can be and in most cases, Perfect.

Trivia/History
A little trivial history for you, you'll notice the quartet trophy undergoes a few changes over the years.  It first appears in 1949 when presented to the Mid-States Four but only the top part was completed.  It was called the Ben Landino Trophy after the Society member who created it after 600 hours of hand tooling. The base was added in 1951 and we then re-vamped (look ma, no little feet) in 1962.  The base was last changed in 1973.

The biggest change was when the trophy was officially retired on the Society's 50th Anniversary and replaced with the one presently being used designed and hand crafted by Society member Jim Law of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

ASCAP presented the other individual trophies and they too have changed over the years.  They first appeared in 1964 and took on various sizes through the years. For some unknown reason, they didn't include the top part of the cup in the 1997 and 1998 but returned the following years.

Instructions
A read me file will accompany this screen saver.  You'll be using Webshots to view these photos and it's a very nice program.  It's a free download from their website and pretty versatile.

http://www.webshots.com/

You'll probably need to download a "sample" screen saver to get it started.  Then you can use these photos in your NEW collection.  The instructions on creating a new collection and adding these photos are rather easy however, I'm not going to attempt to support this software, and I'll just refer you to them.  This, I believe,  is for PC/Windows platforms only. I do not think it'll work on MACs.  Sorry (but this revelation is not new to you, I'm sure).

This program gives you several options.  You can run them in sequence or in random order.  You can have them display the picture titles (the year and name of the quartet) or not, and you can even switch them all to black and white.  You can set it to engage between 1 minutes to 100 minutes of inactivity, you can have each image stay on your screen 5 seconds to 100 seconds. You can even set it to display each image with a special effect.  They also offer you the choice of turning these photos into gifts like t-shirts, mouse pads, mugs, key chains, with your favorite photos displayed.  I've not ordered any and do NOT support this myself.  I'm not sure these photos are of the proper size and resolution to support being placed on a mug or t-shirt.  I do see that their prices are reasonable and invite you to give it a try at your own risk.

As an added BONUS . .
I've also put these into a professional
Microsoft Power Point Presentation.
